The difference is that the dual exhaust system has two exhaust systems on one vehicle. Meaning, when modifying your exhaust, never start from the front of your turbocharged vehicle with a downpipe or with headers on your naturally-aspirated platform, you will create a bottleneck in the flow. By starting with a cat-back first, your exhaust gases will flow more freely if the rest of your system is stock.
An upstream air injection point, ahead of the catalytic converter, is also sometimes present to provide additional oxygen only during the engine warm up period. This causes unburned fuel to ignite in the exhaust tract, thereby preventing it reaching the catalytic converter at all. This technique reduces the engine runtime needed for the catalytic converter to reach its "light-off" or operating temperature. Many vehicles have a close-coupled catalytic converter located near the engine's exhaust manifold. The converter heats up quickly, due to its exposure to the very hot exhaust gases, enabling it to reduce undesirable emissions during the engine warm-up period.
Straight-through, or flow-through, mufflers have perforated baffles and packing material that provides a conservative level of sound absorption while still keeping sound output moderately loud. Glasspack mufflers perform similar to resonators due to their design and lack of sound-absorbing packing material, so they tend to be louder and higher pitched. For compression-ignition (i.e., diesel) engines, the most commonly used catalytic converter is the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). This catalyst converts particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and water. These converters often operate at 90 percent efficiency, virtually eliminating diesel odor and helping reduce visible particulates. These catalysts are ineffective for NOx, so NOx emissions from diesel engines are controlled by exhaust gas recirculation (2008 f250 6.4 egr delete kit).

There are subtle changes on the outside to let onlookers know that this is no ordinary F-150, such as a custom dual-intake hood, a custom front fascia and grille combo, and Shelby badging. One issue is that the system can become clogged with dust and debris over time, causing reduced performance. This can be remedied by regularly cleaning the system with compressed air or a soft brush. Finally, it's always a good idea to check for leaks after installation.
Federal Catalytic Converters are not legal for sale, installation or use in the state of California. It should be noted that a split system will often provide an aggressive noise increase, and some designs will split the two pipes to opposite sides of the vehicle. If you are looking to save a little money but still get most of the benefits of a cat back exhaust system, however, aluminized steel may be the way to go. Made from traditional steel that’s been coated on all sides with aluminum-silicon alloy, these systems are very strong thanks to the metallurgical bond which still provides a level of corrosion resistance. While the aluminum coating reflects heat well, the steel can corrode if the aluminum layer is chipped or scraped off. Most cat-back systems will come in either an aluminized or stainless steel version.
Beyond these incremental advantages, there’s not much to tell cat-back and regular exhausts apart, as they are commonly made from the same types of materials in roughly the same shape. Most newer vehicles have electronic fuel injection systems, and do not require air injection systems in their exhausts. Instead, they provide a precisely controlled air-fuel mixture that quickly and continually cycles between lean and rich combustion. Depending on your make and model, cat back exhaust systems can lead to an increase in fuel economy. The engine doesn’t have to work as hard pushing exhaust gases through the piping which reduces its load and leads to higher efficiency and MPG. For car enthusiasts and performance drivers, upgrading the exhaust system of a vehicle is a no-brainer.
